Abstract

This study examines the role played by e-learning and distance education in developing the educational process, with particular emphasis on their potential to improve access to knowledge, expand learning opportunities, diversify teaching methods, and enhance learner autonomy and interaction with content, instructors, and peers. The study distinguishes distance education as an educational mode based on spatial and/or temporal separation between the participants in the educational process, from e-learning as the use of digital media and technologies in the design, delivery, and assessment of instruction, while acknowledging the substantial overlap between the two concepts. It also discusses blended learning as an approach that combines the advantages of face-to-face education with those of digital learning environments. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by examining specialized literature on distance education and e-learning and analyzing their main advantages, constraints, and conditions for successful implementation in higher education institutions. It concludes that the real value of digital transformation does not lie in automatically replacing face-to-face education, but rather in redesigning the educational process on pedagogical foundations that place the learner at the center of learning and employ technology in ways that serve educational objectives, while ensuring appropriate digital infrastructure, continuous professional development for instructors, technical support for students, and more flexible and reliable assessment systems.
