Abstract

Linear algebra is a fundamental branch of mathematics concerned with vectors, matrices, linear transformations, systems of equations, and vector spaces. Although traditionally studied as a core area of pure and applied mathematics, linear algebra has become increasingly important because of its central role in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer graphics, statistics, optimization, engineering, and scientific computing. Modern datasets are frequently represented as vectors and matrices, while many machine-learning algorithms depend directly on matrix operations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, vector spaces, and matrix decompositions. Linear regression, principal component analysis, neural networks, dimensionality reduction, recommendation systems, image processing, and natural-language processing all rely on mathematical structures derived from linear algebra. This paper examines the fundamental concepts of linear algebra and analyzes their applications in data science and machine learning. It discusses vectors, matrices, systems of linear equations, vector spaces, linear transformations, determinants, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, orthogonality, least-squares approximation, matrix factorization, singular value decomposition, principal component analysis, and optimization. Particular attention is given to how high-dimensional data are represented and transformed using linear-algebraic techniques. The paper also examines computational challenges involving large matrices, numerical stability, sparsity, and dimensionality. The study argues that linear algebra provides the mathematical language through which complex datasets can be organized, transformed, analyzed, and interpreted. As artificial intelligence and large-scale data processing continue to develop, the importance of efficient linear-algebraic computation will increase. The paper concludes that a strong understanding of linear algebra is essential for both the theoretical development and practical implementation of modern data science and machine-learning systems.
