Abstract

The Role of Quranic Schools and Kuttab in Developing Learners’ Education al Skills: A Study of Their Educational and Instructional Functions

This paper examines the educational and instructional role of Kuttab and Quranic schools in developing learners’ educational skills. It focuses on their historical and contemporary functions and explores their contribution to learners’ linguistic, cognitive, affective, and social development. Traditionally, Kuttab was not merely a place for memorizing the Holy Quran; it was also an early educational institution where children learn dreading, writing, pronunciation, listening, memorization, recitation, and basic moral values.

The study analyzes the pedagogical characteristics of Quranic education, particularly oral transmission, repetition, gradual learning, continuous revision, imitation, memorization, and direct correction. It also investigates the relation ship between Quranic education and form al schooling, arguing that these two educational settings can complement one another, especially during early childhood and primary education.

The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach and draw suponrecent Algerian studies investigating the effectiveness of Quranic schools in developing reading and writing skills, reducing reading difficulties, preparing children for formal schooling, and developing cognitive and moral skills. The study concludes that Kuttab and Quranic schools possessing nificant education al potential that can contribute to learners’ skill development if their pedagogical practices are appropriately modernized, their teachers are professionally trained, and cooperation with form al educational institutions isstreng then edwhile preserving their distinctive education al identity.
