Women’s Fiction in George Tarabichi’s Psychological Perspective Nawal El Saadawi as a Model

Abstract

This study examines the psychoanalytic reading of Nawal El Saadawi’s novels through the critical perspective of Georges Tarabichi. Over a critical career spanning half a century, Tarabichi analyzed more than five of her novels across two critical books out of his nine published works of criticism, providing studies that served simultaneously as literary and critical windows into her oeuvre. Utilizing the tenets of psychoanalysis, Tarabichi sought to delve into the depths of the human psyche embodied by El Saadawi’s heroines to uncover their underlying worldview, which directly reflects El Saadawi’s own vision, given her tendency toward autobiographical fiction. This is particularly evident in her novel *Memoirs of a Woman Doctor*, wherein the author closely identifies with and is captivated by her protagonist.
