Influence of Architectural Design on Human Well-Being

The built environment has a significant influence on how people experience comfort, health, safety, productivity, and psychological well-being. Architectural design affects human experience through spatial configuration, daylight, ventilation, thermal conditions, acoustics, materials, access to nature, privacy, and opportunities for social interaction. This paper examines the influence of architectural design on human well-being by reviewing major environmental and spatial factors that shape physical and psychological outcomes. Evidence from environmental health and architectural research indicates that daylight and access to natural environments can support well-being, while poor indoor air quality, excessive noise, thermal discomfort, inadequate daylight, and poorly designed spaces can negatively affect health and performance. Biophilic design and nature-integrated environments may provide additional benefits for stress reduction and perceived restoration, although the strength of evidence varies across design interventions and populations. The paper argues that human well-being should be treated as a central architectural objective rather than a secondary outcome. A human-centered approach requires integration of environmental performance, accessibility, spatial quality, cultural context, safety, and user needs from the earliest design stages. Post-occupancy evaluation and interdisciplinary collaboration can further help architects understand whether intended well-being outcomes are achieved in practice.
