The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed numerous academic and professional disciplines, including translation studies. Among recent AI-powered language technologies, ChatGPT has emerged as one of the most sophisticated conversational systems capable of generating coherent, context-sensitive, and linguistically accurate translations across multiple languages. While traditional machine translation systems primarily focus on lexical and syntactic equivalence, contemporary AI models increasingly demonstrate the ability to preserve pragmatic meaning by considering context, communicative intent, cultural references, discourse conventions, and speaker intentions. This capability has renewed scholarly interest in evaluating the role of generative AI in achieving pragmatic equivalence, one of the most challenging dimensions of translation.
Pragmatic equivalence extends beyond the literal transfer of words and grammatical structures. It concerns the successful communication of implied meanings, speech acts, politeness strategies, presuppositions, implicatures, cultural expressions, humor, irony, and contextual nuances that enable target-language readers to interpret a translated text in a manner comparable to source-language audiences. Achieving such equivalence has traditionally depended upon highly skilled human translators capable of interpreting linguistic and cultural contexts simultaneously. However, the emergence of ChatGPT raises important questions regarding whether artificial intelligence can effectively perform these complex interpretative tasks while maintaining translation quality, coherence, and cultural appropriateness.
This paper examines the contribution of ChatGPT to achieving pragmatic equivalence in translation by exploring its capabilities, opportunities, limitations, and implications within contemporary translation practice. Drawing upon theories of pragmatics, equivalence, discourse analysis, and artificial intelligence-assisted translation, the study investigates how ChatGPT processes contextual information, interprets communicative intentions, resolves ambiguity, and adapts translations according to audience expectations. The discussion further explores the integration of ChatGPT into professional translation workflows, emphasizing the continued importance of human post-editing, ethical responsibility, and cultural expertise. The paper argues that although ChatGPT significantly enhances translation efficiency and contextual sensitivity, it cannot fully replace human translators in situations requiring deep cultural interpretation, specialized domain knowledge, emotional intelligence, and critical judgment. Ultimately, effective translation increasingly depends upon collaborative interaction between artificial intelligence and professional human expertise, where technological innovation complements rather than substitutes human interpretative competence.
